We’re well into November and the facial hair propping up on men around campus is outright shocking. ‘Movember’ is back: some may know this as the annual month of awareness for prostate cancer, and other men’s health issues. Originating in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, 10 years later Movember fever has hit many countries around the world including Ireland, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, and the United States.
Lucas Canzona, Assistant Director of McMaster Campus Events recently stopped by CFMU to discuss the Movember campaign at McMaster. Sporting a growing mustache, he discussed McMaster’s initiative to educate and raise awareness about Movember. Last year, McMaster was able to raise $75,877! We hope to beat this goal for 2013 but as of November 20, we have currently raised $28,622 from 529 members. Lucas stated, “campuses are one of the key focuses of the campaign”, therefore support from staff and students at McMaster is crucial. Proceeds raised will go directly towards supporting the cause, awareness and education, and research supporting those currently living with cancer or mental illness.
McMaster’s link to prostate cancer is a lot closer than many realise: the nuclear reactor on campus is actually used to create iodine 125, the treatment used for those suffering with prostate cancer. This iodine is shipped around the world and treats 100 people per day with prostate cancer. Chris Hassell, the manager of McMaster’s nuclear reactor, has offered an additional $10,000 to donate if we are able to reach last year’s goal of $75, 887!
As an extra motivator, Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield has offered to visit McMaster if we become the top university in Canada to raise the most amount of money. McMaster was in the top three universities last year and this year we must work extra hard to become #1!

Can’t grow facial hair but still want to support Movember? Stop by an open mic coffee house on Nov.29th at the Second Cup in Westdale, 1004 King Street West from 6-9p.m. 100% of proceeds from the evening will support McMaster’s campaign and all attendees are welcome to play some music or simply stop by and listen. Hope to see you there! Remember, we have 10 days to go so let’s make them count!
