Believe it or not, Hamilton has some pretty sweet alleys that are great places to walk, bike, play hockey, and meet up with your neighbours. What’s not so surprising is that a large majority of them are not the safest or nicest places to hangout, with garbage, needles, and more.
So who says alleys can’t be beautiful? Carlos Pinho certainly doesn’t. Just last year, he teamed up with Brenda Duke to organize a team of volunteers to clean up alleyways in Hamilton.
What Beautiful Alleys Coordinator Carlos, and the rest of the Beautiful Alleys team hope to achieve is revitalized alleys all over the city, so that community members can make use of these potentially great community spaces.
Carlos came on the morningfile, joined by Lisa Mansfield who heads their Urban Art Projects and Diedre Connell of Green Venture, to chat about how people can get involved in the upcoming clean up day on September 19, their goals for the project, and the progress the city has made so far. Check out the sound clip below to listen to full interview.
To find out more about Beautiful Alleys or to volunteer, check them out on Facebook or contact Carlos Pinho at firstname.lastname@example.org or 905-923-7770. You can also just show up on Saturday, September 19, between 11 am and 3 pm at Powell Park and get assigned an alley then. A pizza party is to follow for all volunteers at 3:30 pm.
If you’re an artist interested in painting a mural or providing a weather proof art installation for alleys and other public spaces, contact Lisa at email@example.com. Property owners can also contact her to beautify their outdoor spaces with some art.
If you’re just hoping to help revitalize a single alley, the alley winner of the gala alley project from the last clean up is receiving it’s makeover on September 26. Contact Diedre at 905-540-8787 if you’re interested in volunteering, or just show up at 10 am that day at 541 Eatery & Exchange.
