On December 2nd, 2015, the Hamilton indie media community celebrated their own with the second annual Hamilton Independent Media Awards. “The Maggies,” as they are nicknamed, were founded to recognize and support the hard work of local bloggers, radio hosts, filmmakers, writers, photographers, and other indie journalists who work hard to report on our community in ways that corporate media do not.
The awards were named for Maggie Hughes, who hosted the program The Other Side on CFMU for over a decade. With the heart of an activist and the mind of an investigative journalist, Maggie fought for social justice for years, all the while fighting against her own body – she was often paralysed by the symptoms of MS, the disease to which she succumbed in 2012.
Hosted by Ward 3 Counsellor Matt Green, the awards night was a great way to celebrate the hard work done by our city’s independent journalists. The winners were awarded a plaque and a cash prize – an important gesture considering most of these people work for free.
Congrats to the Awards board, staff, and all nominees. A list of winners is below:
- Best Media Outlet: People of Hamilton
- Best Journalist Arts & Culture: Thomas Allen, Rebuild Hamilton
- Best Journalist Social Justice & Human Rights: Cody Lanktree, “Harperman” film
