Dr. Philip Vayalumkal is Making a Difference

Philip Vayalumkal is a former Hamiltonian and Marauder. He attended McMaster University for Life Science and also played on the basketball team in 1999-2000.

In 2006, after his final month of medical school training, Dr. Philip Vayalumkal traveled to Gusap Valley in Papua New Guinea. During his time here, Phil was given the clinical responsibility to care for patients, bring lives into the world and make tough decisions based on high uncertainty. This was his first experience in being a physician and Phil saw all the joys and pains that came alongside this responsibility and privilege.

Although Philip made lots of memories in Papua New Guinea, he also saw that challenges existed, including lack of medicine, supplies, expertise and funds. After he had left, he learned of the organization, Soroptimist International. This organization helped fund the re-development of the clinic’s maternity room.

In furtherย detail, Soroptimist is a global women’s organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women. This is done through programs which lead to social and economic empowerment.

After learning about the organization, Philip immediately knew he had to get involved somehow. After discussing his hope to give back to a clinic that gave him so much in his formative time as a physician, Soroptimist International Canada fully supported his fundraising effort for the Gusap clinic.

Now, you might be wondering – what exactly will this fundraising effort include? Well, this effort centers around the longest one day endurance challenge known as the Ironman. If this name sounds familiar to you, it’s no surprise! The highly intensive challenge includes a 3.86km swim, followed by a 180.2km bicycle ride and finishing with a 42.2km marathon. All of the funds generated from this challenge will be used to focus on the infrastructure needs of the clinic including an ultrasound machine, upgrades to kitchen and laundry facilities, and developing a mobile clinic ambulance program.

The Ironman race will take place on August 21st, 2016 in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. For more information, visit:ย https://goo.gl/0M4Wln
