L’Arche is an international family of communities for those with learning disabilities and wishing to share life with them. Back in 1964, the very first L’Arche home was founded in France by our very own Canadian, Jean Vanier.
Today, over 50 years later, there are 124 L’Arche communities in the world that are located in 30 different countries! The Hamilton branch of L’Arche was founded in 1978 and includes four houses and one apartment, located close to Hamilton’s downtown core. The community consists of 20 core members and also has assistants that live within the four homes.
What’s great about L’Arche is that the community has tons of friends and volunteers involved that share their ideas and energy with the community members. These individuals also often accompany core members to activities such as aquatics!
Earlier this week, Mark spoke with Paige McIsaac (Community Relations & Volunteer) on #MorningFile all about L’Arche Hamilton’s upcoming event, Ability Walk & Roll. This event is aimed towards discovering abilities and bringing light to those with disabilities. There will be an awareness walk and roll, guest speakers, art, lunch, and of course entertainment!
